A crib mattress should be firm, not soft. For infants, firm equals safe: a firm surface keeps baby’s airway clear and lowers the risk of suffocation and sudden infant death. This is the opposite of adult mattress advice, where softness is about comfort. There is no benefit to a soft infant mattress, only risk.
Babies cannot reliably lift or turn their heads in the early months. If a mattress is soft enough to conform to the face, it can restrict breathing and let a baby rebreathe their own exhaled air. A firm, flat surface prevents the mattress from cupping around the head and keeps the airway open.
You do not need equipment. Press your hand firmly into the center of the mattress and then the edges. A safe crib mattress pushes back and returns to flat immediately, with no lasting impression. If it molds to your hand or holds a dent, it is too soft for an infant, no matter how comfortable it feels to you.
Some crib mattresses are dual-sided, with a firmer infant side and a slightly softer toddler side. Always use the firm infant side until your child is comfortably past the infant stage, then you can flip to the toddler side. When in doubt, keep the firmer side up. See firm options in our best crib mattresses and newborn picks.
A firm mattress still has to fit the crib with no more than a two-finger gap around the edges. Firmness and fit are the two safety essentials covered in our crib mattress safety guide.
Note: This is general information, not medical advice. Follow the current American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) safe sleep recommendations and your pediatrician’s guidance for your child.
No. Soft surfaces are a known suffocation risk for infants. A newborn should always sleep on a firm, flat mattress with a fitted sheet and nothing else.
Some are marketed, but soft, conforming foam is not appropriate for infants. If you choose a foam crib mattress, it must be firm and dense enough to pass the press test, not the plush, contouring foam adults prefer.
Firm sleep surfaces matter most in the first year. As your child grows into a toddler, a slightly softer toddler mattress is appropriate. Follow current AAP guidance and your pediatrician on timing.
