Bed Sheet Sizes and Deep Pocket Guide (2026)

By the MattressVetted Research Team · Updated Jul 18, 2026 · How we rate
✓ Quick answer

Buy the fitted sheet in your mattress size, then match the pocket depth to your mattress height. Standard pockets fit mattresses up to about 14 inches, deep-pocket sheets fit 15 to 17 inches, and extra-deep fit 18 inches or more. Remember to include any mattress topper when you measure.

Standard fitted sheet sizes

Size Mattress dimensions (inches)
Twin 38 x 75
Twin XL 38 x 80
Full 54 x 75
Queen 60 x 80
King 76 x 80
California King 72 x 84

These match standard US mattress sizes, so start from your mattress. For the full mattress size breakdown, see our mattress sizes and dimensions chart.

Pocket depth, the part people miss

Pocket type Fits mattress height
Standard Up to about 14 inches
Deep pocket 15 to 17 inches
Extra-deep pocket 18 to 22 inches

A fitted sheet that is too shallow pops off the corners all night, while one that is too deep bunches up. Measure your mattress from the top to where the fitted sheet will tuck under, and add the height of any topper. Thick hybrid and pillow-top beds usually need deep-pocket sheets; see our deep-pocket picks, king sheets for thick mattresses, and queen sheets.

How to measure your mattress

Use a tape measure at the side of the bare mattress, from the top surface straight down to the bottom edge. If you use a mattress topper or a protector, add its thickness, because the fitted sheet has to stretch over everything. Then choose the pocket type from the table above.

Once the size and pocket are right, pick the fiber and weave using our bed sheet buying guide and cotton sheet types guide.

Frequently asked questions

What size sheets do I need for a pillow-top mattress?

Measure the total height including the pillow top, which often pushes a mattress past 14 inches. In that case choose deep-pocket sheets rated for 15 to 17 inches, or extra-deep for very tall beds.

Are queen and full sheets the same?

No. A full mattress is 54 by 75 inches and a queen is 60 by 80 inches, so full sheets are too small for a queen. Always buy sheets in your exact mattress size.

Will a king sheet fit a California king?

Not well. A standard king is 76 by 80 inches and a California king is 72 by 84 inches, so they differ in both width and length. Buy the size labeled for your mattress.
