Two different things get mixed up on sheet labels: the fiber and the weave. Fiber is the cotton itself, from everyday upland cotton up to premium long-staple Pima, Supima, and Egyptian. Weave is how it is woven, either crisp cool percale or silky warmer sateen. Choose a long-staple fiber first, then the weave that matches how you like sheets to feel.
| Fiber | Staple length | Feel and durability |
|---|---|---|
| Upland cotton | Short to medium | Standard, affordable, less smooth |
| Pima / Supima | Long-staple | Smooth, strong, excellent value premium |
| Egyptian cotton | Extra-long-staple | Softest and most durable, priciest, often faked |
Longer fibers spin into smoother, stronger yarn, so long-staple cotton resists pilling and lasts longer. Supima is certified American Pima and a reliable premium choice. Genuine Egyptian cotton is the top tier, but the label is widely misused, so buy from trusted sellers. See our Egyptian cotton picks and cotton sheet picks.
| Weave | Feel | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Percale | Crisp, matte, cool, hotel-like | Hot sleepers, crisp-sheet lovers |
| Sateen | Silky, smooth, slight sheen, warmer | Those who like a soft, luxe feel |
Percale is a simple one-over-one weave that breathes well and feels cool, which is why we point hot sleepers to percale sheets. Sateen floats more yarn on the surface for a silky sheen but sleeps a little warmer.
Linen is very breathable, durable, and softens over years, though it feels textured and wrinkles. Bamboo and Tencel are silky and cool at a lower price but are less durable; see our bamboo picks. Microfiber is cheap and soft but traps heat, so hot sleepers should avoid it and look at our cooling sheets instead.
Pick a long-staple cotton (Pima or Supima for value, Egyptian for premium), then choose percale if you want crisp and cool or sateen if you want silky and smooth. Thread count comes last, within the ranges in our thread count guide. The full method is in our bed sheet buying guide.
Genuine Egyptian cotton has the longest fibers and can be the softest and most durable, but the label is often misused. Certified Supima Pima from a trusted brand frequently beats a mislabeled Egyptian cotton sheet.
They are weaves, not fibers. Percale is crisp, matte, and cool; sateen is silky, slightly shiny, and a little warmer. Both can be made from the same quality cotton.
Bamboo sheets feel silky and sleep cool at a lower price, but they are usually less durable than long-staple cotton. For longevity, cotton wins; for a cool, soft feel on a budget, bamboo is a good option.
