Foam density is how much a foam weighs per cubic foot, measured in pounds (lb). It is a durability and quality signal, not a firmness rating. For memory foam, low density is under about 3 lb, medium is 3 to 5 lb, and high is 5 lb or more. Higher-density foam usually lasts longer and supports better, but can cost more and sleep a little warmer.
Density tells you how much actual foam material is packed into a given space. More material generally means the foam holds up longer before it softens or forms body impressions. It is one of the best predictors of how durable a foam layer will be, which is why it matters more than most spec-sheet numbers.

For the memory foam comfort layer, around 3.5 to 5 lb is a solid, durable range for most sleepers. Very low densities under 3 lb tend to break down faster.
Denser memory foam can retain more heat because there is more material and less air flow. Cooling features like gel or open-cell structure help offset this.
