Thread count is the number of threads woven into one square inch of fabric. There is a real sweet spot, about 200 to 400 for percale and 300 to 600 for sateen, and going higher rarely helps. Beyond roughly 600, brands inflate the number with thin multi-ply yarns, so a huge thread count is a marketing signal, not a mark of quality.
Thread count is the most advertised and least useful number on a sheet package. Here is what it actually measures and how much it should influence your choice.
It counts the vertical and horizontal threads in a square inch of fabric. All else equal, a moderate thread count feels smoother than a very low one. But all else is rarely equal, because fiber quality and weave affect feel far more, and manufacturers can game the count.

To advertise a 1,000 or 1,500 thread count, some brands twist several thin, weaker plies together and count each ply. The result is a heavier, less breathable sheet made from lower quality yarn, dressed up with a big number. A genuine 300 thread count sheet in long-staple cotton will usually beat an inflated 1,500 thread count sheet. When you see an unusually high number at a low price, be skeptical.
Fiber and weave. Long-staple cotton such as Pima, Supima, or genuine Egyptian in a percale or sateen weave is the real quality signal. Usually no. A genuine single-ply weave rarely reaches 1,000, so a four-figure count almost always means inflated multi-ply yarns. A 300 to 500 count in quality long-staple cotton is a better buy.
A lower percale count, around 200 to 300, breathes best and sleeps coolest. Very high counts pack the weave tightly and trap heat.
Not on its own. Durability comes from long-staple fibers and a solid weave. An inflated high count made from weak yarn can actually wear out faster.
